As a dog breeder and owner of multiple German Shepherds, I am always looking for ways to simplify my dogs' care while using ingredients I feel comfortable having in my home. Over the years, I have become increasingly drawn to natural remedies and herbal preparations—not because they replace veterinary care, but because they can provide gentle support for everyday grooming and wellness.

One thing I have always been careful about during bath time is preventing water from entering my dogs' ears. Excess moisture trapped in the ear canal can contribute to irritation and, in some dogs, may increase the risk of ear problems. Instead of allowing water to run over the ears and face, I prefer to use a soft washcloth or cotton pad to gently wipe the muzzle, around the eyes, and the outer ear flap.

Recently, I began making a simple herbal cleansing solution that has quickly become one of my favorite grooming tools. It is gentle, easy to prepare, and versatile enough to use for routine cleaning of the face and outer ears.

Why I Love Herbal Grooming Products

Many commercial products contain ingredients that can be drying or unnecessarily harsh for routine use. While there are excellent commercial ear cleaners available, I enjoy creating simple herbal preparations from ingredients I already keep on hand.

The beauty of herbs is that they have been used traditionally for generations to soothe, calm, and support healthy skin. When prepared properly, they can be a wonderful addition to a natural grooming routine.

The Herbal Ear & Face Cleanser Recipe

Ingredients

For the herbal infusion:

  • 1 tablespoon dried calendula flowers

  • 1 tablespoon dried chamomile flowers

  • 1 tablespoon dried plantain leaf

  • A small pinch of dried lavender

For the cleanser:

  • 1 ounce aloe vera juice

  • 1 ounce vegetable glycerin

  • 1 ounce alcohol-free witch hazel

  • 3–4 ounces freshly prepared herbal infusion

Directions

  1. Place the calendula, chamomile, plantain, and lavender into a clean glass jar.

  2. Pour boiling water over the herbs.

  3. Cover and allow to steep for 15–20 minutes.

  4. Strain the herbs and allow the infusion to cool completely.

  5. In a separate container, combine the aloe vera juice, vegetable glycerin, and witch hazel.

  6. Add the cooled herbal infusion and mix well.

  7. Store in a clean container and refrigerate. Use within several days, or prepare fresh batches as needed.

To use, dampen a soft washcloth or cotton pad and gently wipe around the muzzle, eyes, and outer ears.

When it comes to my dogs, I always reach for the gentlest option first.

The Benefits of Each Herb

Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Calendula is one of my favorite herbs for skin care. Traditionally, it has been used to soothe irritated skin and support the body's natural healing processes. It is gentle, making it a wonderful choice for dogs and puppies alike.

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)

Chamomile is known for its calming properties. In topical preparations, it is often used to comfort sensitive skin and help reduce temporary irritation. It also has a naturally pleasant aroma.

Plantain Leaf (Plantago major)

Plantain is often overlooked, but it is one of nature's most useful backyard herbs. Traditionally, it has been used to soothe skin, support healthy tissue, and provide comfort to areas exposed to environmental stress.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender is beloved for its relaxing scent. In small amounts, it can add a pleasant aroma to herbal preparations while contributing gentle skin-supportive properties.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is widely used for its soothing and moisturizing qualities. It helps leave the skin feeling refreshed and hydrated.

Vegetable Glycerin

Glycerin acts as a natural humectant, helping the skin retain moisture and preventing dryness.

Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel

Witch hazel helps remove dirt and oils from the skin without the harshness associated with alcohol-based products.

Perfect for Puppies

One of the reasons I enjoy using this cleanser is its simplicity. Puppies often require frequent face cleaning, especially after meals, outdoor adventures, or play sessions.

Because this preparation is made from gentle ingredients, I feel comfortable using it on the muzzle, around the eyes, and on the outer ears. Of course, care should always be taken to avoid directly pouring any solution into the eyes.

Don't Have Herbs? No Problem.

One of the wonderful things about herbal care is that it doesn't need to be complicated.

If you don't have loose herbs available, many people already have herbal tea bags in their kitchen. Plain chamomile tea makes an excellent starting point for a simple face wipe.

You can also purchase dried herbs from:

  • Local farmers markets

  • Herbal suppliers

  • Natural food stores

  • Online herb retailers

A simple cup of cooled chamomile tea can often serve as a gentle cleanser for wiping around the muzzle and outer ears.

A Few Important Notes

This recipe is intended for routine grooming and cleaning only. It is not designed to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.

If your dog has:

  • A strong odor coming from the ears

  • Redness or swelling

  • Excessive scratching

  • Discharge

  • Pain or sensitivity

Please consult your veterinarian, as these may be signs of an ear infection or another medical condition.

Keeping Things Simple

Sometimes the best solutions are also the simplest.

A handful of herbs, a few gentle ingredients, and a soft washcloth can become part of a calm grooming routine that both you and your dog enjoy. Whether you raise puppies, compete with dogs, or simply love your family companion, incorporating gentle herbal care into everyday life can be a rewarding way to support your dog's comfort and well-being.

At the end of the day, my goal is simple: clean dogs, healthy skin, and ingredients I feel good about using.
